Scuba Certification
There
are basically two types of diving: snorkeling and scuba diving. The
snorkeler is skilled in the use of mask, fins, snorkel and the
buoyancy compensator, or "BC." The scuba diver has all the
knowledge of the underwater breathing equipment including air cylinder
and breathing regulator and gauges to monitor pressure, depth, time
and direction which results in scuba certification. The word scuba
stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.
Certification
is required by dives stores, resorts, air stations and charter boat
operations before breathing equipment can be rented, cylinders filled
or diving services provided.
In
order to obtain certification a diver must successfully complete a
required course of instruction in both classroom and water settings.
Most courses are designed to give students conceptual knowledge of the
physics of diving, such as the effects of varying atmospheric
pressures, the proper function of dive equipment, and the physiology
of diving.
When
a student successfully completes classroom training, pool (confined
water) training, open water dives and a final exam, a certification
card is issued. This "C-Card" and accompanying log book
document that, at the end of the Open Water Diver Course, the
individual is proficient in basic skills of scuba diving.
